A.B. Combs Elementary school uses the Baldridge tools in conjunction with the 7 Habits. The Baldrdige Performance Excellence Program is part of the National Institute of Standards and Technology (NIST) and the Department of Commerce. The Baldridge Program’s mission is to improve the competitiveness and performace of U.S. organizations. The concepts have been taken and applied to education in terms that students can understand and use.

Montgomery Public Schools in Rockville, MD has implemented the Baldridge in Education Initiative. They were the 2010 award recipient of the Malcom Baldridge National Quality Award for performance excellence. Their website provides extensive information about what the program entails and how to implement it in a classroom. This is a great website to explore to deepen your understanding about the Baldridge program.

The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People is the book from which The Leader in Me started. Steven Covey presents a principle-centered approach for solving personal and professional problems. He does this with a step-by-step pathway for living with fairness, integrity, honesty, and human dignity- principles that give us the security to adapt to change and the wisdom and power to take advantage of the opportunities that change creates.

In a TIME Magazine article Kathleen Kingsbury discusses the effects of the 7 Habits with Steven Covey. Here Covey states that the most important Habit to instill in students is Habit #1- be proactive. This is the Habit that will teach kids to take responsibility. He also shares his belief that the partnership between schools and families is the most important education priority. This is a belief that he discusses in depth in his book The Leader in Me.
